LES ROSEAUX DE PIERRE
STONE REEDS

STONE REEDS  Cistercians in Languedoc-Roussillon

“Trees and rocks will teach you things that you would not hear elsewhere »

The film directed by Raymond Achilli took for itself the above sentence by Saint-Bernard of Clairvaux. Phrased with inspiring silences and a lighting that shapes the architecture and brings it to life, this document allows each of us to broach Cîteaux monks’ philosophy. Their philosophy finds its expression not only through prayers and chants, but also through landscapes that bear witness to their labour, or through architectures that assert purity, simplicity and sobriety. The film is a sheer initiatory voyage into the very heart of Languedoc-Roussillon’s heritage, it transports us across time, space and ideas, altogether. Cistercians were present in the Middle-Ages and today, they remain alive through their architectural bequeath as well as through their daily prayers. The reed, symbol of persistence and of mind, is a pattern often shown on the Cistercian carvings, thus, it remains inscribed between the vegetable and the mineral kingdom.«Beyond prayers and geographical locations, first and foremost, I wanted to stroll through an atmosphere. An abbey, it’s a kind of airlock between earth and heavens. Below the vaults and in the cloisters, time gets lost into the stones’ silence. It cannot be measured any more, it can only be watched through the course of light which, by an equinox morning or a solstice evening, shines on a chapter house, a capital or a sculpture dozing in the darkness. » R.Achilli.
